A Living Collection of Music, Stories, and Memory
This page is one of the most personal parts of my website.
It is a tribute to my mother, Dr. Carol Yampolsky - her lifelong love of music, her extraordinary gift as a pianist and teacher, and the quiet ways she has enriched the lives of so many through the years.
For decades, she has shared her music with students, congregations, audiences, friends, and family. Beyond every performance has been something even more enduring: a gift for creating moments of beauty, comfort, reflection, and joy.
This collection is my way of preserving those moments while we can still experience them together.
Through recordings, conversations, photographs, performances, and stories from those whose lives she has touched, we are creating a living tribute that celebrates not only her remarkable musical journey, but the legacy she continues to write every day.
Pianist. Teacher. Mentor.
Dr. Carol Yampolsky has spent a lifetime sharing the gift of music.
A native New Yorker, she began her musical studies at the Juilliard School of Music and made her Carnegie Hall debut at just nine years old. She later earned both her master's and doctorate degrees in piano performance, laying the foundation for a distinguished career as a performer, educator, and mentor.
For many years, Dr. Yampolsky served as Associate Professor of Piano at Howard University, where she inspired generations of students through both her artistry and her commitment to excellence. Her love of music also led to decades of performing and researching works by women composers alongside flutist Janese Sampson, with appearances at national conferences and music festivals celebrating their contributions.
In recent years, her musical journey has taken a deeply personal turn. Drawing on her classical training, her appreciation for jazz influences, and her lifelong faith, she has created expressive interpretations of hymns that have brought comfort and inspiration to many. Her recordings, Wondrous Love and Reflections, reflect not only her musicianship but also the heart she brings to every note.
More than any title or performance, however, those who know Carol often remember something even greater—her quiet presence, her generosity as a teacher, and the lasting encouragement she has given to countless students, friends, and family members throughout her life.
Celebrating Women Through Music
One of the defining chapters of Carol's musical journey began when flutist Janese Sampson invited her to collaborate on a project celebrating the works of women composers. Together, they spent more than three decades researching, performing, and bringing greater visibility to music that had too often been overlooked.
Their performances were featured at conferences and festivals dedicated to women's contributions to music, helping introduce audiences to remarkable composers whose work has often been overlooked.
This playlist highlights a selection of those performances and reflects Carol's lifelong commitment to musical excellence, education, and expanding the voices represented in classical music.
The Invitation
One of the greatest gifts we can give someone is letting them know how they've touched our lives.
If you have been a student, colleague, friend, family member, or simply someone who has been moved by Carol's music, I would love to hear from you.
There is no right way to share. A single memory, a favorite performance, a lesson you still carry with you, or a few heartfelt words can become a meaningful part of this living collection.
If you're not sure where to begin, you might reflect on questions like these:
What comes to mind when you think of Carol at the piano?
How has her music made you feel?
What has she taught you that extends beyond music?
How has her presence influenced your confidence, discipline, or outlook on life?
Is there a moment with Carol that has stayed with you over the years?
Written reflections, voice recordings, photographs, or short video messages are all welcome. Every contribution helps tell the story of a life that continues to inspire others.
